Accessing a Loved Ones iPhone Data After Death
I hope you will read the information below - you and your family will thank me later.
Over the years of working with clients, we’ve received many requests to help them access a loved one’s iPhone after their death because they don’t have the password to the phone.
This is not something that crosses most people’s mind – that they should share this information with their family, friends, executor, etc.
If you call the Apple, they aren’t going to help you break into that person’s phone either – you are out of luck.
We’ve heard the pain in our client’s voices when they can’t access the phone – especially the photos.
How do you gain access to this Apple account and iPhone to access their pictures, video, contacts, and more?
YOU DON’T – unless the individual shared the phone PIN or set this up in their will to give Apple permission for you to have access to your iCloud Account.
Hopefully you synched your data to your Apple iCloud account. The data may include photos, messages, notes, files, apps you've downloaded and device backups. Data stored in your keychain - like credit cards and passwords can't be accessed by your Legacy Contact.
NOW…Apple has made it easy for a loved one to access the iCloud Account after an individual’s gone – but it MUST be set up in advance.
A Legacy Contact(s) can access data from your iPhone account and download the data after your death.
You must set up a Legacy Contact(s) on your iPhone and it’s simple and quick.
If you have an iPhone (with at least iOS 15.2) make the time now and set this feature up – it will take you just a few minutes.
And, it will save your loved ones hours of frustration and time.
I’m not sure how many Legacy Contacts you can set up on your phone, I have three set up on my phone.
How to Set Up a Legacy Contact
Go to Settings on your iPhone
Go to your Account at the top of the Settings Page
Touch Sign-In & Security
Scroll down to Legacy Contact
Touch Add Legacy Contact
Touch Add Legacy Contact button
Select the Contact on Your Phone you want to make your Legacy Contact
Touch Continue
You will receive an email stating that a Legacy Contact was added.
You will have the option to Print the Access Key that you can give to your Legacy Contact. Do this.
I recommend you print the access key and give it to your Legacy Contact and explain to them what you have done and why you gave them access.
Android Users: I do not know this operating system; so you may want to inquire with your provider to see if there is such a feature for your smart phone.
Closing Thoughts
I hope you will spend a few minutes to set up your Legacy Contact(s). Keep in mind, this does not give your Legacy Contact(s) your passwords, so using a password manager, such as LastPass, is also a good way to shared information with loved ones.
Be sure to share this information with friends and family about what you did.
Wishing you sustainable organization and purposeful productivity.
