Get Organized in 2021!

Dear ,

Happy New Year!

A new year for many means resolutions, intentions and goals for the year.

One of the top “New Year’s Resolutions” is to “Get Organized.”

In fact, it’s such a popular resolution – and one of the top 5 each year – that there is an entire month dedicated to “getting organized and being more productive.”

January is “GO MONTH” which stands for “Get Organized and Be More Productive” month. Bet you didn’t know an entire month exists for this activity!

But what does it REALLY mean to “get organized?”

And, it’s not just about getting organized after all, it’s about “staying organized” or choosing to live a more organized life.

Maybe you aspire to organize your pantry, books, or clothes using a “rainbow” as your guide (ROYGBIV – thank you Home Edit).

I might add that it’s not that easy to do if you don’t have the “colors” in your collection you need to make this “system” work.  It may be pretty, but not always practical.

Or, perhaps you want to KonMari your clothes and towels (thank you Marie Kondo) – not easy to maintain, IMO.

Want to know a secret?  While I can fold your items this way and make them look Instagram worthy, I don’t even do this in my own home! Nope, it’s not for me as I will not “maintain it.”  Shocking, I know!

Maintenance is one of the keys to “staying organized” and “maintaining” the organization systems you created.

15+ years ago, long before there was ROYGIV or KonMari, I wrote about the 10-Step Process to Organize Your Home & Life.

This is the Eliminate Chaos process that we know works for our clients – with Step 10 being….wait for it….you guessed it, MAINTENANCE.

You can grab your copy of my process HERE – without having to buy the Book.  Just scroll down to “Our Process” to download the document.

Last year, in our Home Organizing newsletter, I did a video series on each step of our 10-Step Process.

If you missed it and want to watch the series, you can access it on our YouTube channel.

Subscribe to our YouTube Channel if you’d like to receive more great “how to” videos.

I’m working on a new series of videos for this newsletter for you this year, and I NEED YOUR HELP!

  • What part of your home do you want to get organized?
  • What do you want to see?
  • What do you need help with?
  • What do you want to learn?

Drop me a line – [email protected] and let me know what you are interested in and maybe this will be a video I make for you this year for the newsletter.

As an added BONUS, these videos will be made in our home, so you can see how we live an organized life – and practice what we teach.

What areas of your home will you focus on this year?

Maybe it will be your home office – or area of your home that serves as a home office.

Maybe it will be your kitchen or pantry – now that you are cooking more and eating at home.

Perhaps it’s the garage that you want to turn into a multi-purpose room.

Each one of these projects can be very overwhelming and take hours to complete, but you don’t have to do the entire project in day.

Break it down into easy, smaller tasks that you can do in 20 minutes to an hour intervals at a time. If you have more time, great - keep going!

To help you get a kick-start on one area of your home, I am going to include some tips for your home office.

If you’re home office is perfectly organized, great job, you don’t need to read any further, but I'm guessing there may be one or two things you could still do!

Organization is a “process, not an event” and sometimes practical is more important than pretty if it helps you maintain what you’ve created.

Remember, “It’s Not About the Stuff®.”

21 Organizing Ideas (for 2021)
Projects you can easilty accomplish in your "home office"

Keep in mind that in every office space, there are four “categories” of things to organize; they are:

  • Paper
  • Electronic Information
  • Stuff – anything that is not paper or furniture
  • Furniture

Here are some ideas and tips to get you started:

Paper – 9 Ideas | Tips

  • Eliminate utility statements – you don’t need them unless you are deducting part of your home on your taxes if you are “running a business” from home.
  • Shred past tax returns – per IRS Publication 552, you only need to keep THREE years, not SEVEN.  Google it to learn more.
  • Make a folder for your 2021 Tax Return and start dropping paperwork into it as you receive it for this year’s tax preparation.
  • Shred old credit card and bank statements that you no longer need (many may be available online) and you don’t need them, unless you are running a business.  Scan them if you really want them, or set up a Free account at File This to download them in electronic format for you so you can stop receiving paper versions.
  • Gather scraps of paper with notes, passwords, lists – sort first into categories and then act on the information at a later date.
  • Gather any holiday greetings/card/letters received, determine those you want to keep and establish a place for the special sentiments – it’s OK to let the rest go, I give you permission.  Update your address book with new addresses.
  • Business cards – toss those you can’t remember why you had them and organize the rest into a digital address book, or binder when you can review the card if you are visual.
  • Gather “Vital Records” information; such as:  passports, POA’s, Will(s), medical directives, car/boat titles, birth certificates, citizenship papers, divorce decree (original), death certificates, immunization records, jewelry appraisals, marriage certificate(s) (original), military records, etc.  Store these in a safe place, such as a fireproof safe.
  • Create a “Daily Action Center” (DAC) for papers and information you access each day.  For more information on what a Daily Action Center is, watch this video.

Electronic Information – 8 Ideas | Tips

  • Get your passwords organized – setup a digital password manager such as LastPass.  If you want to watch a video on how to get started, I’ve recorded one of our programs for you.
  • Clean off your desktop – computer desktop that is.  File documents and photos into folders.
  • Clean out your “Download” folder – this will free up space on your computer.  Delete items not needed or file the rest away.
  • Delete photos on your smartphone – no you don’t need them all!  Ensure they are backed up.
  • Delete old texts.
  • Delete e-mails you no longer need, set a goal for 100 day, or some number that is realistic to you. File e-mails you need to keep for future reference.  Then, empty your deleted items folder.
  • Ensure your computers are properly backed up.  If they aren’t or you have concerns, let me know and I can schedule some time with Rob to setup BackBlaze for you.  BackBlaze with the backup program we use and recommend our clients use.
  • Delete apps you never use on your smart phone and organize them into categories to make finding them easier.

Stuff – 4 Ideas | Tips

  • Gather all “office supply” items; pens, pencils, sharpies, sticky notes, paper, tape, glue and organize any excess and backstock into one area you can “shop” at home from.
  • Remove everything from the top of your desk or work surface.  Wipe it down, and put back ONLY what you need out and access daily.  You’ll be surprised what you can live without.
  • If books live in your office, take a good look at what you are never going to read or refer to again and let it go.  I know this is not easy for some, but they are just taking up space, space you can use for something else.
  • Cords and cables.  When is the last time you took a look at the tangled mess of cords/cables?  Do you still have one from your flip-phone years ago?  Might be time to recycle.  Always label cables when you first get a new electronic device and you’ll never wonder what that cord/cable belongs to.
