Ideas to Manage and Organize Your Bills

Three years ago, I wrote an article about managing your bills that I received a lot of feedback that this information was extremely helpful.  The third week of February is “Manage Your Bills” week and so the theme for this article will be to provide some updates to the original information I shared in February 2009.  If you’d like to read what many raved about three years ago, click here.

Today, many of us pay our bills online.  If you aren’t already doing this, you need to spend the time to set it up; it will save you time and money in the long run.  I’ve heard plenty of reasons why people have not already done this and the number one reason is usually “security.”  Take if from someone who is married to a computer security specialist – we both pay our bills online and have never once had an issue.  It’s safe and secure.  Once you’ve set online bill-pay up (or if you’ve already done so) many banks now offer a free “app” (application) for your smartphone or iPad.  I have accounts with three different financial institutions:  Chase, Fidelity and Union Bank and each offer free apps to help me manage my accounts.  None of these three financial institutions are compensating me to write this and in fact, one of these banks I am eliminating in the near future.  I mention these features because I have used their apps and they are a huge time saver for me personally and for Eliminate Chaos.  For example, most days I no longer need to go to the bank.  I can deposit checks, transfer money between accounts, pay bills, do wire transfers and even transfer money to a friend’s account to help pay a bill for a dinner out.  By taking a picture of the front and back of the check and entering the deposit amount, you can complete a deposit in a matter of minutes.  Each financial institution has different limits on the amount of money you can deposit this way, so be sure to know what the limits are.

If you’re having a challenge managing all of the bills a simple checklist or Excel spreadsheet can be very helpful to ensure the bills are paid on-time.  No one wants to pay late fees or have their credit affected because the mortgage was paid late.  Here’s some of the information I like to capture when setting up a template for client:  Account Name, Account Number, Date Due, Amount Owed (or approximate you pay each month), Phone Number, Website Address, How Paid (check, online, auto withdrawal).

If you want to get your financial life organized and all in one place, you may want to check out Mint.com.  Mint offers FREE service to help you do just this.  Mint brings all your financial accounts together online or on your mobile device, automatically categorizes your transactions, lets you set budgets and helps you achieve your savings goals.  There are free apps for your iPad, iPhone and Android phones as well as tablet computers.

Don’t forget, if you want additional information about how to manage your bills – there are 7 ideas waiting for you here.

Wishing you a well-organized bill payment system,
Laura Leist, CPO, CRTS

  • "I worked with Erin, one of the specialists who works with the Chronically Disorganized (hoarders). In a word, she was fantastic. In four 4-hour sessions, she helped me go through and box up (keep, donate, trash) almost everything that was stacked up in my kitchen, dining room, office, and bonus room. Erin arrived promptly. We went over what I wanted to accomplish that day, then we got to work. She was focused, calm, non-judgmental, and tireless. She faced very dirty circumstances and didn't bat an eyelash. She never once caused me a moment of anxiety; the relief that I felt when we were done was amazing. And Laura Leist, who is the owner of Eliminate Chaos, was lovely. She returned my calls promptly, was kind and understanding, and offered me some options. I would hire this company again in a heartbeat. But right now I'm too busy enjoying all the free space in my house!"
